CHOOSING AN APPROACH

EMDR vs Flash Technique: how to choose

I'm trained in both, so I've no stake in which you pick. The honest short answer: Flash is usually where we start when approaching the memory at all feels impossible, and EMDR is where we go when it doesn't.

The core difference

EMDR asks you to hold the target memory in mind while bilateral stimulation runs. Flash deliberately does the opposite — you keep your attention on something pleasant and unrelated, and the difficult material processes in the background of awareness.

That single difference is the whole decision.

When Flash first

If you've avoided trauma therapy for years, if previous work flooded you, or if you need to stay functional through the process, Flash is often the way in. It's frequently used to take the charge down enough that EMDR becomes tolerable.

Being straight about the evidence

EMDR has decades of research and sits in major clinical guidelines for PTSD. Flash is newer — there's published research and a growing literature, but it is not an equivalent evidence base. If research volume matters most to you, that's a real reason to start with EMDR, and I'd tell you so.
